This is back tracking a little bit. We went to a Long House, which is the old way they uses to live. Some still do today, but not so many. This long house is about 300 years old. It's famous because of the bamboo flooring, which is clear in this picture.
They have harvested and are drying black pepper here. Black and white pepper from Sarawak is very famous. It's the same but dried in a different way. I personally am not a fan of white pepper. I don't like the taste and smell.
White pepper is expensive and very desirable here.
If everyone were to return to this long house at one time there would be about 3000 people.
They have rooms here guests can stay in. I guess if you want to go exploring in the jungle or something you would do that. Not me.
These are real sculls. Probably Japanese from the war. Most long houses still have these on display. Tradition was to become a man you had to kill a man and take the skull and then you got a tattoo from your chin down your neck. We have seen some men with these tattoos. They of course were older men because they haven't done this since the end of WWII, We are not even 100 years since this took place.
Leave it to an Elder!!
Some artist has lived here. I will show you several pictures painted on the houses.
These two girls carry these bags full of rocks all day long to build a house. They carry them quite a ways. The Elders decided to help them. They only did one load for them. You put the basket on your head and off you go. Elders could barely get off the ground.
They were hurting the rest of the day. I don't know how these young ladies do this all day?
Another cute painting. My favorite.
And another.
This young man is plucking the feathers off a chicken. I assume for dinner.
I guess this is one of the kitchens in the long house. I don't remember this. Looks pretty nice for a long house.
More of the bamboo decking. The house goes for a long ways. They live side by side in their own sections.
This is in Singapore. The National Museum was very beautiful with nice paintings and displays.
We did a lot of walking this day and my feet were really hurting. Singapore is a big city. Their subway is fantastic; we love it. We use it to and from the airport and all day long. We just keep putting money on our subway card.
